Local People Recognised in New Year Honours List

Awards for services to the community

The Queen's New Year honours list has been published and as well as the big names it features several local people from the Ealing area.

There are knighthoods for Star Trek and X-Men star Patrick Stewart, National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner, and rugby legend Ian McGeechan. There are also MBEs for Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button and Britain’s most successful gymnast, Beth Tweddle.

Anyone can be nominated but only exceptional people are honoured. The latest list includes classroom assistants, customs officers, fashion designers, foster carers, poets, charity workers and a stamp designer.

In total 979 people have been recommended to The Queen for an award.

More than half of the people receiving MBEs were put forward by members of the public. And more women have been honoured than ever before, making up 45 per cent of the list

Locally, there's a CBE for Caroline Rookes who is Director, Planning for Retirement and Older People at the Department for Work and Pensions.

An OBE is awarded to Gordon Raymond Couch for services to Disabled People.

There are MBEs for Patricia Chapman for services to Young People and to the community in Ealing and Dr Doreen Elizabeth Finneron for services to Inter-Faith Relations.
