Ealing Author Releases Children's Book – The Wizard's Assistant

Ealing resident Mel Scott-Avis has published her first children’s picture book, The Wizard’s Assistant, a rhyming story that explores themes of honesty, kindness, and the challenges of working for a demanding employer. The book marks Mel’s debut as both author and illustrator.
The story is part of a broader collection titled Mummy’s Fables, which draws inspiration from traditional fables and bedtime storytelling. The books aim to help children engage with emotional and behavioural concepts such as patience, friendship, and consequences through imaginative narratives.
“I wanted to write stories that were both fun to read aloud and that gently help parents and caregivers teach useful things to children,” said Mel. “Kids love magic and mischief – and The Wizard’s Assistant has plenty of both.”
The release will be accompanied by a series of school visits and community events across West London throughout the autumn. The book is currently available online and is expected to reach bookshops and libraries in the coming months.
Mel, who lives in Ealing with her family, has a background in fine art and describes her work as focused on everyday experiences and the lessons they offer to children.
