Photographs from around the Ealing area during lockdown are featured in a new book raising vital funds for Ealing Soup Kitchen.
The images were taken between March and July last year in - the first lockdown.
Local resident, Sean McDonnell, turned his attention from a lifetime of taking photographs in London's West End to his own neighbourhood with photos documenting the way our lives became crowded with all sorts of new visuals.

Adverts for holidays became a distant dream. TFL promoted riding bikes, not taking the tube. Supermarkets asked us if we really needed to buy more. People's garden walls became display shelves for all sorts of belongings that were being given away.

Chalk made a comeback for games. Everywhere social distance circles appeared on pavements. Some shops came back to life, others did not.

Ealing Soup Kitchen is a charity which has been operating since 1973 providing hot food and company for anyone in need. Led by Andrew Mcleay, the Monday & Friday drop-ins are run by volunteers and provide clothes, food, a hairdresser, showers, practical help, games and a doctor. Over the last very difficult year the Soup Kitchen has proved invaluable to many.

Sean says, “The idea for a book to raise money for my local foodbank seemed the least I could do. As well as making a time capsule for the future we're helping people in need today.

As the highlight of the campaign, Tv Presenter and recent compere of Ealing Film Festival, Mel Giedroyc, who's a supporter of Ealing Foodbank, will host a Zoom discussion about the book with Sean.

"It’s a wonderful book and so evocative of what we’ve all experienced in Ealing over Lockdown" says Mel .

The Living Lockdown book is available to buy online or from The Pitshanger Bookshop.
All proceeds go to Ealing Foodbank.

7.30pm, Thursday January 21st
