Hanwell and Perivale Libraries will shut until next year to undergo refurbishment
Residents are invited to an event to mark Hanwell Library’s last day of opening next weekend, before it undergoes a £900,000 refurbishment.
Last year the historic Carnegie building was one of four libraries under threat of closure but a massive campaign by local residents forced the Council to change plans.
Now, Hanwell is due to be modernised - which will include updating the library, as well as installing new self-service units and meetings rooms, along with a lift to the first floor for better accessibility. There will be more study space with Wi-Fi connection, and the children and young people’s area will be extended and redesigned. The library will also receive some new additions to its book collection.
Running from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 20 October, the day will include music and dance performances, history talks, poetry and reading group discussions. There will also be singing, art and reading sessions for children and babies.
Beginning next month, Perivale Library will also undergo a £400,000 refurbishment, both libraries expected to reopen in May 2013.
Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member of community services and safety, said: “Many of Ealing’s libraries have already benefitted from significant investments and these two are the next on the list to be improved. The refurbishments at Hanwell and Perivale libraries will bring the buildings up-to-date, ensure they are accessible, modern and properly equipped for local residents.
“Most importantly, the much-loved buildings will be bought back to life and I look forward to watching them take shape over the next few months.”
