Several people from the Ealing area have been given awards in the New Year Honours for 2021.

The emphasis of the honours given out this year has been on those who have made a special contribution during the coronavirus pandemic.

Lisa Knight, a Chief Nurse who works for London North West University Healthcare (LNWH) NHS Trust which includes Ealing Hospital, one of the worst hit hospitals during first wave of the virus.

Lisa has been in the NHS for more than 30 years, having qualified as a nurse in 1989. She led major elements of the Trust’s response to Covid-19, including providing clinical leadership for its nurses, midwives, Allied Health Professionals and healthcare assistants. She also led the infection control response to the Trust’s recovery programme, putting in place long term measures to protect patients as the organisation returned to providing routine care.

Under her leadership, Central Middlesex Hospital became one of the first hospitals in the country to be able to return to providing elective surgery and procedures. Lisa has been continually supportive of LNWH’s clinical teams.

A spokesperson for the Trust said, “Her kindness and compassion make her a wonderful role model for nurses, healthcare assistants and midwives.”

Lisa said, “I’m deeply grateful to have been nominated for this honour. It’s a lovely surprise, and one that I want to share with my nurses who continue to be so fantastic during the pandemic. Having trained at London North West myself early in my career, it’s meant a lot for me to be working with the Trust during this challenging time.

“It’s been an extraordinarily tough year and I couldn’t ask for more from my colleagues who carry on working in often difficult circumstances. There is a great sense of unity here and I’m proud to be part of this team. Nurses are the backbone of the NHS and this award is recognition of all the hard work and sacrifice they have made in the past year.”

The coordinator for the Mael Gael Multicultural Community Project, Daljit Singh Grewal, has been given a British Empire Medal (BEM). Staffed entirely by a team of volunteers, Mael Gael is an elderly and youth project based at Norwood Hall in Southall serving all sections of the community.

During the Covid-19 outbreak Daljit rapidly established partnerships with Ealing Council and local community groups setting up a food bank in Southall and a shopping service for those unable to shop for themselves taking daily referrals from Ealing Council and local community groups. A free-meals service ensured the delivery of freshly cooked healthy meals to help alleviate food insecurity in the area.

He said, “This is an incredible honour. I am in total disbelief. I feel very fortunate to be supported by such an enthusiastic and dynamic team, driven by SEVA and the selfless service of others. The need for what we do at Mael Gael has never been greater. I would like to thank the Gurdwara Executive Committee, Mael Gael Trustees and Team for their unwavering support and encouragement which has allows us to continue with our work.”

Narinder Sian, speaking for Mael Gael said, “We are extremely pleased with Daljit’s recognition. He’s been working hard alongside us both at the Gurdwara and Mael Gael. A hugely talented and valued member of the team. His voluntary work in the fields of education, care for the elderly, women’s issues and the engagement of our youth has been outstanding”.

Katie Dodd, who has been a member of Ealing Hockey Club for 25 years, has been awarded an MBE for services to hockey. She has been involved in the sport for the best part of 40 years.
