Tens of thousands of people from London and beyond flocked to West Ealing at the weekend (14th August) for the annual and highly colourful Hindu chariot procession.
Organised by the Shri Kanagathurkkai Amman Temple in Chapel Road, W13, the festival commemorates the Hindu war god Murugan’s defeat of the demon Soorapadam using a ‘divine spear’ known as a vel. Those taking part offer up a sign of devotion to Murugan, carrying a pot of milk on their heads, piercing their skin with vels or rolling along the road.
Musicians played and stalls and food was available helping to raise funds for the temple's projects.
Ealing's Council leader Julian Bell addressed the crowd thanking them for their contribution to the community in Ealing, London and beyond, and described the event as a "fantastic atmosphere."
