Beating The Bounds To Raise Funds

Circular walk of Hanwell on Bank Holiday Monday

Beating the Bounds - a circular walk around the old parish boundary of Hanwell - takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 3 May to raise funds for Hanwell Carnival and Show.

The walk, which last took place in 2006, provides an opportunity for participants to find out more about Hanwell’s history and the extent of it’s parish boundary and to support Hanwell Carnival and Show which celebrates its 50th consecutive year in June this year.

Beating the Bounds remembers the old tradition of checking the parish boundaries to embed a folk memory of their true extent, when the priest of the parish led a group of young boys armed with willow or birch boughs to beat the boundary markers.

The walk starts from and finishes at the Fox Inn from midday on Bank Holiday Monday, where walkers should register and pick up a walking map and historical guide to the route.  Walkers with small children may wish to complete the first half of the walk which is more pushchair friendly.  Further details and sponsor forms are available on the Carnival website www.hanwellcarnival.co.uk or by phoning Elaine Hill on 07788 585857.
