No smoke alarms in the block in Woodfield Road
Two women who were trying to alert neighbours to a blaze at their block of flats on Woodfield Road in Pitshanger were rescued last night.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus helped the two women out of the building after the blaze broke out in a second floor flat.
Both women were suffering from breathing problems caused by smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital.
Around 10 people fled before the Brigade arrived.
Watch Manager Colin Bruce from Ealing fire station was at the scene and said:
“When we turned up around 10 people had managed to escape the fire. Two women were still inside the block knocking on their neighbours doors to wake them up and get everyone out in time.
'' None of the flats had any smoke alarms and therefore no one realised there was a fire until the two women started waking up everyone. It is really important that everyone has a working smoke alarm in their home. It gives you vital early warning in case there is a fire and it can really save your life.”
The fire severely damaged part of a second floor flat.
Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Ealing fire station were called to the fire at 0008 and the fire was under control by 0053.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
