Free Summer Film Festival For Ealing

Funding to screen two days of movies is close to target

One of the largest independent grant makers in the UK has pledged £1,500 towards an Ealing community project designed to celebrate the area’s rich cinematic heritage.

The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation funds independent organisations rooted in their communities and helps them to exploit opportunities for coordinated community action. Its recent pledge to the Ealing Free Film Festival (EFFF) pushes the project even closer to its final target of £4,130.

EFFF is an initiative organised by funding platform Spacehive and business degree provider GSM London. The two-day film event, in Ealing Green, aims to promote the area’s cinematic reputation and community cohesion. It is also a way for students to apply some of their academic learning and harnesses their skills to design, create and deliver a project within the local community.

The initiative is led by GSM London lecturer Hope Flynn, who is based at the institution’s Greenford campus, and will feature outdoor screenings of the black comedy 'The Ladykillers' (1955) and the iconic US musical 'Dreamgirls' on Friday 11 August and Saturday 12 August.

"Free films are a great way to engage the local community and we aim to build connections and nurture partnerships with local businesses and individuals by staging this event," Hope said. "The initiative provides opportunities for students to develop volunteering, marketing and social media skills, which can contribute to their skillset and enhance their CVs."

So far, the project has secured 87% or £3,595 of its £4,130 target and has 70 backers. But there is still and have 12 days to go and more time for film lovers to show their support by pledging.

As part of the event, a range of local food and drinks vendors will be participating during the festival. Stallholders selling food, drink, and arts and crafts that are interested in supporting the event are encouraged to email hope.flynn@gsmlondon.ac.uk for more information.
