Payback Time for Former Criminals

Offenders making amends at Ealing animal centre

Former offenders are helping restore Brent Lodge Animal Centre as part of a community payback scheme.

Up to 16 people aged between 17 and over 50 are taking part in the project. The participants have all been sentenced to unpaid work for various offences, including theft and drink driving.

The group will carry out heavy demolition work on a run down bird aviary. Once complete, people with disabilities who use the Stirling Road Day Centre will revitalise the area with new plants. This will allow the centre to put birds in the aviary next summer.

Councillor Vlod Barchuk, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: “It is great to see the project continuing to give back to the community, while helping offenders understand the consequences of their actions.

“The restoration work will greatly enhance the Brent Lodge Animal Centre, and the new bird aviary will be a welcome improvement for residents to enjoy.”
