Eric Leach's Ealing Covid-19 Latest Update

Borough's new coronavirus cases number rises week on week

Ealing is One of 14 London Boroughs Where Covid-19 Case Numbers are Rising

On Monday 7 September 2020 Ealing and Newham had the highest new Covid-19 cases (18 each) of any London Borough.

For the week of 31 August to 6 September 2020 there were 69 new Covid-19 cases in Ealing. In the previous week it was 43. To put these figures into perspective in purely numerical terms the worst weekly increase was in Bolton at 377 with the previous week at 207. The ‘best’ was East Cambridge with 1 and 3. As for cases/100,000 Ealing is at 20.2. Bolton at 131.1 and East Cambridge at 1.1.

These figures came from the PA news agency and are compiled based on Public Health England data and published on the Government’s Coronavirus dashboard.

Covid-19 Response LTNs Divide Our Community

Being installed today should be the ‘Mattock Lane Loveday Road Low Traffic Neighbourhood’. However for days 100s of vehicles driving west have been doing 6 point turns in Mattock Lane as they are surprised by the road block just before Culmington Road. Tomorrow we have the prospect of the ‘West Ealing North LTN’ being installed. Residents on Felix Road are unsure what the Council’s map of this actually means. Emails to local Councillors have gone unanswered.

West Ealing Neighbours (WEN) just completed its first online survey of the ‘West Ealing South LTN’ (LTN 21) – with its 10 road blocks. 921 residents in W13, W7 and W5 postal districts responded from 25 August to 6 September 2020. 71% are ‘strongly against’ and 13% are ‘strongly in favour’. WEN intends to carry out another online survey in a few months time.

Over 7,500 have signed their names to the anti-LTN petition.

Exposurebox, the Ealing video news and information channel, has now shot and released three LTN videos. So far these videos have been viewed over 4,900 times. The latest one is here.

At 2pm on Saturday 12 September an anti-LTN march will assemble at The Quadrant on Little Ealing Lane, W5 and head south west and then north along Northfield Avenue to the Lido Junction.

Just in case you might have forgotten why the Government, Transport for London and Ealing Council are rushing through these experimental, urgent, temporary LTNs - it’s ‘to provide safe space for pedestrians and cyclists to travel’.

School Streets Schemes to be Adopted by 16 Ealing Primary Schools

These schemes aim to make streets safer for children and parents arriving and leaving school. Two neighbouring schools in Perivale have signed up for the scheme permanently. They are Perivale Primary and St John Fisher Catholic Primary. During Term time vehicle drivers will need a permit to drive down parts of Fraser, Sarsfield, Federal and Perimeade Roads from 8:15 to 9:15am and 2:45 to 3:45pm. Free permits can be obtained from Ealing Council. Without a permit a fine of £130 will be levied. More detail and a map at: perivale.ealing.sch.uk

14 Primary schools have signed up temporarily for the scheme. They are Ark, Berrymeade, Derwentwater, Gifford, Grange, Holy Family Catholic, Mayfield, North Ealing, Oaklands, St. John’s, St Mark’s, Vicars Green, West Acton and Willow Tree.

So unsuspecting vehicle drivers in the early morning and the afternoon could receive a Penalty Charge Notice on at least 18 Ealing streets.

Council Leader Julian Bell is quoted as linking School Street schemes with the town’s Covid-19 response.
