Widely known for his Alan Partridge comedy character, the actor Steve Coogan is currently filming in Ealing - this time playing a very different role.

Residents near Greenford Community Centre on Oldfield Road South spotted the film crew and the actor who is playing former police officer - DCI Clive Driscoll - the man who finally secured convictions for the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Lawrence, 18, was stabbed to death at a bus stop in 1993 in Eltham, South London in a racially motivated attack.

The three-part drama currently being filmed ‘Stephen’ is a sequel to Bafta-winning drama The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, which first aired in 1999.

At the time of the first series, no one had been convicted of the murder, but Gary Dobson and David Norris were eventually jailed for the murder in 2012.

The new series will portray events from 2006, 13 years after Stephen's death and focus on the Lawrence family’s struggle to get justice for their son.

It's written by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Joe Cottrell Boyce, produced by HTM (Hat Trick Mercurio) and executive produced by Mark Redhead and Paul Greengrass, alongside Jimmy Mulville and Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio.

Greenford Community Centre has a number of multi-purpose rooms and a car-park and appears to double up as a police station in this new series.

Polly Hill, head of drama at ITV, said: “It feels appropriate for us to return to the Stephen Lawrence case on ITV. The brilliant film, The Murder Of Stephen Lawrence, could only take the story so far, Stephen continues that story.

“It’s important to remember just how long it took Doreen and Neville to get a conviction for two of the men responsible for the death of their son Stephen. Frank and Joe have written beautiful scripts and I am delighted to have Alrick on board to direct this important drama.”

Director Alrick Riley told NME : “The case of Stephen Lawrence is a testament to the fortitude, persistence and determination of the Lawrence family.

“These films will chart the successes, disappointments and the emotional toll they endured. It’s also the story of Clive Driscoll, the lead detective, who managed to forge a friendship with the Lawrences over the years it took to achieve two convictions. It’s an honour to have the opportunity to tell their story.”
