In a night that will be etched into English football history, Chloe Kelly once again proved herself the Lionesses’ key performer, scoring the decisive penalty in a dramatic shootout victory over Spain to retain their European Championship crown.
Chloe, who grew up in Ealing and honed her skills playing with her five brothers in the local parks including Pitshanger Park has repeated her feat from the previous competition in 2022 when she scored the winning goal.
As in previous games in the tournament, Chloe was not in the starting line-up, but the Arsenal winger was called into action earlier than expected, replacing the injured Lauren James in the first half. She quickly made her mark, delivering a pinpoint cross for Alessia Russo to head home the equaliser. With the match locked at 1-1 after extra time, she stepped up in the shootout and coolly converted the winning spot-kick, resulting in back-to-back Euro titles for England.
“I am so proud of this team. So grateful to wear this badge. So proud to be English,” Chloe told BBC Sport after the match.
Her connection with the borough of Ealing, of which she was made a Freewoman after her previous exploits, has remained strong despite her rise to stardom. She’s spoken often about her early days playing for Queens Park Rangers and her time at Elthorne Park High School. Local clubs and youth coaches have celebrated her success as a beacon for aspiring players in the area.
“She’s one of our own,” said a coach from Actonians LFC, where Chloe once trained. “What she’s done for women’s football and for Ealing is incredible. She’s shown that talent, grit, and belief can take you all the way.”
The win also marked a personal redemption arc for Chloe, who earlier this year considered stepping away from football after a difficult spell at Manchester City. Her move to Arsenal and resurgence on the pitch culminated in Sunday night’s heroics—a moment she described as “unbelievable” and “full of gratitude”.

Local MP Deirdre Costigan responded to the match by posting on X, “Fantastic to watch the pride of Hanwell & former Elthorne Park High School student, @chloekelly score the winning penalty tonight. Girls across Ealing Southall will be inspired by the @Lionesses' brilliant achievement!”
Ealing Council leader, Peter Mason said, “A fantastic performance from the Lionesses, with Ealing & Hanwell’s very own Freewoman of the Borough Chloe Kelly, bringing it home.”
