Emergency services in attendance and road was closed

65 residents were evacuated from a gym and apartments above following reports of a strong smell from a block of flats in West Ealing.

Fire crews were called just after 8pm to the Uxbridge Road (where The Gym is) to investigate after reports of a strong smell of chemicals.

The road was closed off from Northfield Avenue towards Ealing and buses were diverted as firefighters, using specialist equipment, carried out a sweep of the fourth floor of the building, where the smell had been coming from.

As a precaution crews wearing breathing apparatus evacuated around 15 people from the flats and they were checked over by London Ambulance Service. A further 50 people were evacuated from the gym on the ground floor of the block.

After a thorough investigation no raised chemical levels were detected by firefighters and people were allowed to return to the building.

The Brigade was called at 2005 and the incident was over by 2337.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters and officers from Ealing, Southall and Acton fire stations were at the scene, as well as a range of specialist vehicles and equipment. London Ambulance Service also attended the incident.
