Top performances from St Benedict's rugby teams
St Benedict’s School, Ealing has won 4 out of 5 Middlesex Rugby Cups at U18, U15, U14 and U13 levels.
The U18s won the Middlesex Cup for the first time beating Haberdashers’ 30-15 in the final. Charlie Crane (winger) scored two well worked tries from set pieces early on and the Ealing boys went in at half time 24-7 up. However, Haberdashers’ were tenacious and closed the gap to 24-15 before fly half Sean O’Hagan kicked a penalty and a drop goal in the last few minutes to ease nerves. Mark Makram (flanker) picked up the Man of the Match Award.
The Under 14s beat Enfield Grammar 15-7 in their final. Two early tries by Sean Hatoum (winger) and Bogdan de Berg (No 8) were followed later by a great individual try by Man of the Match Pierre Goualin (Full Back), who followed up his kick-chase, turned the ball over and beat the cover defence to make it 15-0. The seven points were conceded in injury time at the end of the game.
The U13s worked the phases well against opponents Gunnersbury in the first half and attacked wide in numbers to score two tries and go in at the break 10-0 up. In the second half, Ronaldo Boyle (winger) scored an early try to extend the lead to 17 points. Gunnersbury fought hard to get back into the game and scored two tries making it 17-10. Charlie Page (full back) made several spectacular cover tackles to deny Gunnersbury getting that crucial third try, and deservedly picked up the Man of the Match award. Final score was 17-10.
Mill Hill forfeited their final against St Benedict’s U15s, having recently played against them in the fourth round of the Daily Mail Cup, which they lost 76-0. The U16s faced a very strong Hampton side, who were last year’s Daily Mail cup finalists, and were well beaten 0-34, preventing St Benedict’s from getting a clean sweep in the Middlesex Cup.
Director of Sport Nick Guise said “This year was the first time we decided to enter the Middlesex Cup in every age group, with the aim to win each competition. Every team achieved this except for the U16s who were second best to a very well organised Hampton side. I am delighted with winning four out of five. It shows real strength in depth across the Senior School with a wealth of talent developing through the years.”
