Campaigners trying to save town centre from 'inappropriate' development

Appeal to Help Fund Ealing Centre Battle

Campaigners hoping to save the heritage of Ealing town Centre are seeking support to pay for legal costs.

The Secretary of State has called in the planning application for the area of known as 9-42 The Broadway and there will be a public inquiry in May 2017.

This is the second time plans have been called in on this site. In 2009 the Secretary of State overturned a previous approval by the Council. The planning inspector upheld local objections. He thought the bulk, massing and design of the earlier scheme were inappropriate and said the development would cause undue harm to two Conservation Areas and the Grade II* listed Church of Christ the Saviour.

Historic England will appear along with Save Ealing Centre (SEC) to argue that the plans conflict with with national, regional and local planning policies.

Other objections have been raised by The Victorian Society, SAVE Britain’s Heritage, Ealiing Civic Society, local ward councillors, MP Dr Rupa Huq and an online petition with 2000 names.

Janet Sacks from SEC says, ''This inquiry matters not just for Ealing town centre, but for the whole of our borough and for any town centre across London where the pressure to build new housing is leading local councils to ignore ‘awkward’ policies such as those protecting heritage.
By standing together as a community we want to send a message to Ealing Council to think again before they allow developers to destroy our town centre centre.
We won last time, and with help from the Ealing community we can win again!'

SEC needs to raise £25,000 to pay for the lawyers and is appealing for public help.
