School Scarecrow in Competition Finals

Oaklands sculpture at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Henrietta, a Tudor-themed scarecrow created by year 4 pupils at Oaklands Primary School, Hanwell, has won a place in the National Finals of the RHS Tudor Scarecrow competition at the Hampton Court Flower show.

Henrietta is an abstract sculpture designed and created by Oaklands pupils from recyclable materials, depicting Henry’s colourful wives and their untimely demise.

The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show takes place from Tuesday 7 to Sunday 12 July 2009 and is the world’s largest annual flower show, visited by over 165,000 people.

Celebrating the 500 year anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne, the RHS challenged primary schools from the south-east of England, registered with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, to get creative and enter their very own Tudor scarecrow using plant and recycled materials.

The finalists, including Henrietta, will be displayed at the show.

Visitors to the show will vote for their favourite scarecrow during the week.

The winner will be announced on 12 July at the show and on the Campaign for School Gardening website (www.rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening).

The winning school will receive £200 worth of garden centre vouchers to be spent on plants and tools for a school garden.
