Former restaurant owner guilty of dumping rubbish

An Ealing Councillor says he's disappointed at the level of court fine for a former restaurant owner whose staff had been dumping rubbish in Northfield Avenue.

Mr Shahab Uddin pleaded guilty to six waste offences at Ealing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 3 November 2011.

He had owned restaurant India India at 206 Northfield Avenue when members of his staff dumped rubbish outside his business on six different occasions in April 2010.

The incidents were caught on a CCTV camera and investigated by Ealing Council’s Envirocrime team.

Despite having a contract with a company to pick up his waste and the business having been advised on how to dispose of waste, his staff still dumped oil containers, cardboard, black plastic sacks and plastic trays on the pavement outside.

Mr Uddin was fined £300 and ordered to pay £350 costs with a victim surcharge of £15, totalling £665.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said:

“This is another good result for our enforcement team who have been working hard to prosecute businesses who break the law regarding waste disposal.

''In my opinion, it is disappointing that in this case the fines are comparatively low and do not reflect the seriousness of fly-tipping. We will continue to enforce and bring as many of these cases to court as we possibly can to make an example of those who break the rules.”
