Remembrance Services across Hounslow
Concert on Saturday night
Community groups are set to join veterans and local Hounslow dignitaries on Remembrance Sunday to remember those who lost their lives in the two world wars.
Services are taking place across the borough and serving military personnel, cubs, scouts and guides will parade their colours alongside veterans, who will lay wreaths in memory of fallen friends.
Remembrance events taking place in Hounslow include:
• Bedfont: A service takes place at St Mary's Church, Bedfont, from 10.30am, with Bedfont Ward Councillor Keith Anderson attending.
• Brentford: Councillor Myra Savin, Deputy Mayor of Hounslow, will attend a service at 10.30am at Brentford Memorial outside Brentford Library.
• Chiswick: There will be a wreath-laying service at Chiswick War Memorial at 10.30am, followed by a remembrance service at Christ Church, in Turnham Green. Chiswick Riverside Ward Councillor Paul Lynch is attending.
• Feltham: Former Hounslow Mayor Corinna Smart and Maria Pedro, the Deputy Lieutenant of Hounslow, will be present at a service of dedication at Feltham war memorial, in High Street, Feltham, at 2.30pm, following a parade from Victoria Road.
• Hounslow: There will be a remembrance service at Holy Trinity Church, Hounslow, at 10.30am. Councillor Mukesh Malhotra is attending.
• Hanworth: Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, will attend a service of remembrance at Hanworth War Memorial. The parade will leave from the Royal British Legion, in Cross Road, at 10.20am.
• Isleworth: Councillor Sue Sampson will join veterans at a remembrance service at the monument outside Our Lady of Sorrow and Bridget RC Church by St Mary's school, Isleworth, at 10.30am.
Inspired by In Flanders Fields, a poem penned by a Canadian field surgeon, Remembrance Sunday sports the poppy as its emblem.
Lt Col John McCrae was struck by the sight of peaceful fields of the crimson flower near Ypres being torn to shreds during the First World War, it has now come to represent the lives lost in both world wars.
On the eve of Remembrance Sunday, international soprano Sarah Gabriel will join Hounslow Youth Orchestra, Hounslow Youth Brass and Hounslow Youth Choir for a remembrance concert at Holy Trinity Church in High Street, Hounslow.
The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will feature numbers from the musical The Sound of Music, music from Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and from the film The Dam Busters.
Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a chance for Hounslow’s Second World War veterans to remember friends who lost their lives in the conflict but it’s also a chance for all of us to think about the sacrifices made by so many people and focus on the horror of war so that it’s never forgotten and never repeated.
“I hope as many people as possible will join us for the borough’s remembrance services and proudly wear the British Legion’s poppy.”
Armistice Day commemorates the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 1918 when peace terms were signed ending the Great War.
There will be an Armistice Day event on the Civic Centre in Lampton Road to which everyone is invited to attend.
