Brentford Voice has published the first issue of its new Environmental Newsletter, aiming to raise awareness of pressing ecological challenges and encourage practical, community-led responses across the town.

The newsletter, released in September, highlights a range of environmental concerns affecting Brentford—from Heathrow expansion and aircraft noise to plastic pollution in local waterways and the protection of rare habitats along the Thames. It also outlines opportunities for residents to get involved in shaping a greener, healthier, and more sustainable town.

“We face a climate emergency,” the group writes, “but through local action, we can make a difference now.” The newsletter is part of Brentford Voice’s broader mission to work with the community to improve the town as a place to live, work, study, play, and visit.

One of the lead stories focuses on Heathrow’s renewed expansion plans, which include a third runway and increased flight capacity. Brentford Voice warns that the proposals lack sufficient detail on climate impact and flight path changes, and could expose large parts of Brentford to harmful noise levels. The group encourages residents to sign a parliamentary petition and engage with campaign organisations such as HACAN and Flight Free UK.

The newsletter also draws attention to the growing plastics crisis, citing recent research from The Lancet and local studies on microplastic pollution in the Thames. Brentford Voice plans to raise awareness at waterside events like the Canal Festival and is seeking ideas on how best to highlight the risks to wildlife and river health.

Brentford’s unique stretch of unembanked Thames at Syon—home to rare species and designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest—is featured as a local asset requiring continued protection. The newsletter outlines plans for a “Beeline” walking route along the disused railway embankment north of London Road, designed to support insect life and connect open spaces.

The group also supports wider efforts to upgrade and extend green corridors, referencing Ealing’s recent commitment to an 8km wildlife route along the River Brent.

Brentford Voice is inviting residents to contribute ideas, volunteer time, or share specialist knowledge to help shape future environmental projects. The newsletter will be published quarterly, and the group hopes it will serve as a catalyst for greater engagement with both local and national issues.

“We believe many people find some of the bigger issues beyond their control,” the group notes. “By localising how they can help—even in a small way—we hope to raise awareness and build momentum.”

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
