Crushing Victory for Labour in Hounslow Council Elections

Party close to a clean sweep in the Brentford area

Labour have increased their majority in Hounslow Council after winning a significant number of extra seats across the borough.

Based on the results declared so far Labour look set to win at least 49 seats in the borough leaving the Conservatives largely confined to an enclave in Chiswick.

A clean sweep in the Brentford area was denied Labour after the vote in the Osterley and Spring Grove ward was double checked and the Conservatives were declared to have won two of the three seats.

Like in other areas of London, Labour seems to have not been affected by the increased UKIP vote. In other parts of the country they did see some of their core support drift away to Nigel Farage's party.

The Conservatives on the other hand appear to have suffered more as some of their Councillors who had won with the party in 2010 were this time standing for UKIP. Although the party's support remained solid in Chiswick, in areas like Bedfont, Feltham and Hanworth, where they were hoping to make ground, they lost rather than gained seats. Previous strongholds like Osterley and Spring Grove fell. The UKIP councillors were equally unsuccessful in retaining their seats as Labour cleaned up in areas they traditionally don't do well in.

It was a bad day also for the Isleworth Community Group which was hoping to win back seats it had lost in 2010 in Isleworth and Syon. Last time the coincidence with the general election had meant a high turnout and more emphasis on national issues but even with a decline in the percentage vote, Labour managed to hang on to their seats in these wards.

Overall turnout was 39.3% much lower than last time but voting was boosted in 2010 because of the General Election on the same day.

Labour performed well in other London boroughs taking the prized scalp of Hammersmith and Fulham as well as gaining overall control of Merton and winning some ground in the Tory stronghold of Wandsworth.
